Res Hall Essentials

11 Res Hall Room Essentials
There’s a lot you’ll want to bring to make your residence hall feel like home, but we’ve narrowed it down to eleven helpful items you might not have thought of. You’ll find links below to order from online shops!
Command Strips and Hooks
Command strips and hooks are a must-have. They’re perfect for hanging photos, artwork, towels, or mirrors, and the best part is they come off the walls cleanly and easily.
Storage Bins
Storage bins will help you stay organized, which is essential when you’re living in a shared space. You can place them inside dressers to divide your drawers or set them on your shelves. Use them to hold clothes, craft items, or school supplies. The possibilities are endless!
Shower Caddy
Depending on where you live, you may have to walk down the hall to the bathroom. Having a shower caddy makes it simple—just grab your caddy and go!
Shoe Rack
Another way to save space and stay organized is to have a shoe rack. There are many kinds, but some of the most convenient and popular are over-the-door options.
Mattress Topper
Adjusting to a new bed can throw off your sleep, so bringing a comfortable mattress topper like the one you use at home can make a big difference. Just be sure it’s twin XL size and that your sheets will still fit over it.
Long Phone Charger
The worst feeling is having your phone die at night because you forgot to plug in your charger. Having a long phone charger makes this a non-issue! Your bed may be a little taller than you’re used to, and a longer charger means you don’t have to worry about pulling it out of the wall. Remember—extension cords are not allowed!
Power Strip
Most people have more than one device, and when you add lamps, fans, microwaves, or mini-fridges to the mix, outlets fill up fast. Since arranging your room around plug access can be a hassle, bringing a power strip (or two) will save you a lot of frustration.
Laundry Basket
When choosing a laundry basket, prioritize two things: durability and size. Pick one that can handle the walk down the hall or being crammed in the back of your car for a weekend trip home.
Desk Hutch or Shelves
When space is limited, think vertically. Adding extra shelves to your desk can help maximize storage and keep your study area organized. Don’t stop there! Consider installing shelves in your closet or utilizing the space under your bed for additional storage. These strategies not only free up floor space but also make it easier to keep your belongings tidy and accessible.
Cleaning Supplies and Sanitation Products
Mercer does a great job keeping our residence halls and buildings sanitary, but you may want to bring supplies to keep your personal space clean. In order to maintain a healthy living environment, consider bringing your own cleaning supplies, including: Lysol wipes, soap, hand sanitizer, and bathroom cleaner (if you share a bathroom).
Pictures
Last, but certainly not least, bring pictures! Displaying them in your room can lead to great conversations. Pictures are a fun way to learn about other students’ families and friends from home. It’s easy and affordable to select photos from your phone and have them printed at Walmart or your local drugstore, such as Walgreens or CVS.
