Why We’re Requiring Test Scores Again (and What It Means for You)

At Mercer, we are committed to enrolling and graduating students who endeavor to make a positive impact throughout the world. As we look to the future, we are returning to a test-required admissions policy beginning with the Fall 2026 application cycle. This decision is rooted in our mission and driven by a deep commitment to student success.

Over the past five years, we have operated with a test-optional policy while continuing our practice of carefully reviewing each and every application through a holistic lens. That holistic review process benefits from as much information as possible about an individual applicant. In addition to a student’s academic record, co-curricular involvement, and leadership and service experiences standardized test scores offer an additional lens through which we can understand a student’s academic preparedness and potential.

Test scores are not the sole determinant in our application review process, nor should they be. Because we know from experience that grading scales and academic curriculum can vary, a standardized measure serves as one more valuable piece of the whole application. We will never reduce students to numbers, and we will continue to honor students’ individuality by considering all available information when making admission decisions.

By returning to a test-required policy, we also seek to bring greater clarity and consistency to the admissions process for students, families, and school counselors.

Our primary goal remains the same: to ensure every student we admit is prepared to thrive at Mercer and beyond.

Sincerely,

Mark Fox
