3 Things to Keep in Mind On Your Next College Visit

Campus visits are fun and exciting — and an important step in the college decision process. Here are 3 things to do on your next college visit.

1. Explore your interests.

Does the school offer clubs and organizations that intersect with your interests and passions? Ask your admissions counselor or tour guide for a list of campus clubs.

And if you’re up for it, check in with a current student for their thoughts on campus life. Do they enjoy spending time on campus? What are their favorite clubs and organizations? Talking to a current student is a great way to get an inside look at what it’s like being active on campus.

2. Be practical.

It’s easy to get wrapped up in the excitement of a college visit, but there are a few practicalities to consider:

  • How far away is it from your hometown?
  • What is the climate like?
  • Is the campus large or small?
  • Is the campus walkable? Will you need a car to get from your dorm room to your classes?
  • Is the surrounding community large or small? Are there things to do?

These are all important things to consider as you make your decision.

3. Explore the campus and community.

Scheduled campus tours are a great way to get to know a college, but you should definitely explore the campus and community on your own, too.

Visit local restaurants (if you’re in Macon, definitely stop by The Rookery or Jag’s Pizzeria and Pub); take a tour of the city (Rock Candy Tours in downtown Macon offers great Macon music history tours!); and check out local parks and shopping districts.

This might be your home away from home for four years, so make sure you love it!

A college visit is the best way to determine if a school is a good fit for you. On your next visit, be sure to:

  1. Explore your interests.
  2. Be practical.
  3. Explore the campus and community (on your own!).
