Have you started your college search? If so, you’re on the right track! Now is the time to keep going and narrow down your options.

What are your dream school must-haves? What can you live without?

If you haven’t figured that out yet, that’s okay! We’re here to help. Keep reading for 5 questions to ask yourself during your college search.

1. What do I want to study?

First, be open-minded and consider a few majors that interest you.

Are you great at math? Have a strong interest in biology? Consider your strengths and interests, and start there!

Above all, remember this: While it’s good to have an idea of what you’d like to study, it’s okay to change your mind! Just be sure the schools you consider offer your interests.

2. How far away do I want to be from home?

Want easy access to home-cooked meals and your parents laundry room? You might want to consider a college that’s within easy driving distance of home.

That said, if you’re up for an adventure and a little more independence, a school that’s a bit further away might work for you.

Distance may be a major deciding factor or not important at all, so take it into consideration.

3. What are my hobbies and interests?

Think about your hobbies and interests, and look for a school that has campus organizations related to them.

It’s important you also think about the organizations that will help you step out of your comfort zone. For example, did you know Mercer has a Spartan Society, a club dedicated to intense thrills and athletic events, such as paintball outings and fun runs?

Remember: College is about more than academics, so choose one that offers a wide variety of extracurricular activities, too.

4. Is this school a good fit for me?

While you’re on your campus visit, check in with yourself and ask, “Could I see myself being a student here? Does this feel like home?”

Each student is looking for something different, so only you will be able to determine if a school is a good fit or not.

5. What kind of college town am I looking for?

Are you looking for the hustle and bustle of a big city, or is a small town more your vibe?

When you visit a campus, be sure to also explore its surroundings and what it has to offer. After all, you’ll likely be there for four years; it’s important that you love where you live!

It’s never too late to start your college search, so whether you’re at the beginning of the process or narrowing it down to your final selections, ask yourself these questions:

  1. What do I want to study?
  2. How far away do I want to be from home?
